Explaining What A Lucid Dream Is

By David Lancaster

In layman's terms, a lucid dream is a dream you have where you are actually aware of the fact that you're busy having a dream. The term 'lucid' simply refers to being aware or conscious, and of course the full extent of your lucidity depends largely on your actual dream experience, together with the amount of detail you are able to remember when you wake up, and of course, the level of control you had over the dream.

This last point which has been mentioned is without a doubt the most amazing thing of all. Actually being able to realize that one is dreaming is something which words simply cannot explain. It is by all accounts almost unbelievable that one can actually control the direction of a dream and be free of limitations.

Just for a moment to try and imagine what it must feel like, bearing in mind that by all accounts it feels, looks, and sounds exactly like a real life situation. However, the difference is, it's only a dream. Unlike in the real world, one is not restricted by rules and regulations, and neither can one become injured and die in a lucid dream. The bottom line is; a lucid dream is yours. It is your personal virtual reality, and you can be rest assured that even the most sophisticated computers in the world can't provide you with anything similar.

It simply cannot be denied that lucid dreaming is a skill which can only be described as being fantastic. It's hardly surprising really that so many people are now longing to master the art of lucid dreaming. Interestingly enough, most people will have the occasional lucid dream but just imagine if you could experience one whenever you want.

Depending on your own personal desires, lucid dreaming can be your own private doorway to the most incredible experiences. From socializing with world famous celebrities, to visiting distant lands and exotic places, lucid dreaming opens up a whole new world of opportunity. In fact, one can even travel to the most distant planets of the universe or spend some quality time with loved ones who have already departed from this world.

Unfortunately though, being able to experience lucid dreams on a regular basis is not always very easy. Until recently, the vast majority of people wanting to experience lucid dreaming would dedicate months and months in order to receive suitable training and self conditioning. Admittedly, many of these people did eventually manage to have lucid dreams but for the most part they were very brief experiences, while many people on the other hand never achieved any level of success at all.

Can one find simple ways which make it possible to experience a lucid dream?

Interestingly enough, there are a great many people who believe that certain foods help to induce a lucid dream. It is said that one should eat these foods immediately before going to sleep. Amongst the foods which are reported for encouraging lucid dreaming are mustard, cheese, milk, and orange juice.

Fish, pickles, popcorn, and ice cream have also been mentioned. Even though these foods don't seem to compare with those mentioned above, many people do claim that these help to improve dream recall. Unfortunately for many people who may be on a diet, all the foods just mentioned contain a lot of sugar, salt, and fat, none of which are known to promote a good night's sleep.

Is technology able to help?

As time moves on, so too does technology so it comes as little surprise that technology can nowadays assist people with regards to lucidity. In fact, technology can now be used in order to both stimulate and induce lucid dreams. Various devices which come in the form of masks and eyeshades can now detect REM in a person and when they do, they then begin to blink a red beam of light. By integrating this beam of light with the dream, it is hoped that the beam of light will serve to remind the subject that they are dreaming, thus providing them with an opportunity to try and control the direction of the dream.

In addition to these new the innovative devices, recent developments in some technology have also done much in the line of opening the doors to the world of lucid dreams. Just recently scientists have gone ahead and developed a process known as binaural beats; a process which involves playing sound at different frequencies into each ear.

Essentially, this intriguing new process aims to synchronize the two hemispheres in the brain and the amazing thing is; results are almost instantaneous in that rapid eye movement occurs almost immediately when one starts listening to these binaural beats. The state of sleep where REM takes place is of course the state of sleep required for lucid dreaming.

Anyone who has an interest in experiencing a lucid dream can be rest assured that this is without a doubt the easiest and most reliable way for getting started. - 31521
